GLOSSARY TO THE HOLODYNAMIC PATTERN THEORY
(Updated 10th Aug 2026)

Consolidated Glossary of Key Terms
Alphabetical Order

Atemporal
Not subject to the constraints of sequential time; characteristic of the Narrative Mode and the Ground, where all relations exist simultaneously without past, present, or future distinction. In the Narrative Mode, time is replaced by experiential "now" moments of holistic relations—each "now" is an instantaneous registration of the pattern's own relational structure, not a moment in a sequential chain. Experience in the atemporal realm does not require duration or sequence; it is the immediate registration of the pattern's own relational coherence, the quale of being that specific pattern. While all patterns exist simultaneously in the Field (co-existence), each pattern's experience is its own registration of its own relational structure. However, because the Field is holistic, patterns can feel other patterns via resonance—the non-local alignment of coherence between patterns. Resonance requires a sufficient level of elaboration: simple patterns have limited resonance capacity, while Self-Aware Patterns (SAPs) have greater capacity to align with other patterns. Resonance is not the experience of another pattern's interiority; it is the registration of one's own alignment (or misalignment) with that pattern. Simultaneity in the atemporal sense means co-presence in the Field, not co-experience of all patterns. [Principle 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 62]
Avalanche effect
The cascade of disruption through a holistic SAP constellation when a vital component fails. Causes the constellation to cross the viability threshold for Physical Mode expression, potentially triggering NDE or death.

Bliss-as-experience
What Self-Aware Patterns (SAPs) and sufficiently elaborated patterns feel when they achieve deep resonance with the HUD. Simple patterns with non-reflective self-awareness do not experience bliss as such.

Bliss-as-nature
The Ground's intrinsic nature. Not an experience, but what the Ground is. Patterns experience bliss-as-experience when they harmonise with the HUD; that experience reflects (without being identical to) the Ground's own nature.

Causal Matrix
The Narrative Mode considered as the ground of Physical Mode order. The collective resonance of all continuing SAPs creates a probability landscape that biases which patterns become physically instantiated. Not a transcendent chooser but an immanent, emergent property of the Field's own structure.

Channel
The physical instrument (body) through which the HUD expresses in the Physical Mode. Not the source of the HUD but its temporary conduit. Channel capacity declines with age due to entropy and cellular degradation; the HUD itself remains constant.

Coherence
Coherence is the degree to which a Self-Aware Pattern (SAP) is integrated, stable, resonant with its associated patterns, and aligned with the Holistic Unity Drive (HUD). It exists on a continuous spectrum from fragmentary to near-full, with infinite gradations. Full coherence is never attained—it is approached asymptotically.
There are two dimensions to coherence:
1. SAP-Specific Coherence: The degree to which a SAP is integrated and resonant with its own associated patterns—its memories, relationships, values, beliefs, and experiences. This is the coherence of the SAP's personal network. When a SAP achieves SAP-specific coherence, it experiences meaning, stability, and "rightness."
2. Field-Aligned Coherence: The degree to which a SAP is aligned with the HUD—the Field's intrinsic towardness toward love, unity, and connection. This is the coherence of the SAP with the whole. When a SAP achieves Field-aligned coherence, it experiences love, peace, connection, and home.
All SAPs will be aware of other patterns that they resonate with or feel dissonant towards. This awareness is interiority—the felt experience of coherence or incoherence. When a SAP resonates with a pattern, it experiences love, meaning, peace, connection, or "rightness." When a SAP is dissonant with a pattern, it experiences suffering, conflict, meaninglessness, or "wrongness."
The HUD is the principle that makes both forms of coherence possible. It is the intrinsic fitability of the Field with itself—the bias toward resonance and the registration of dissonance. The SAP's experience of SAP-specific coherence is its participation in the integration of its personal network. The SAP's experience of Field-aligned coherence is its participation in the whole.
The striving toward coherence is the striving toward both integration of the personal network AND alignment with the HUD. It is the eternal movement toward love, meaning, peace, and connection—a movement that is never fully complete, but that defines the trajectory of every SAP.

Coherent Expression
Post-dissolution continuation with retained identity, articulate self-awareness, and capacity for trans-mode resonance. A possible outcome achieved by SAPs whose coherence (orientation to the HUD) crossed a threshold during physical-mode expression. We do not know what proportion of SAPs achieve this.

Complementarity
In quantum physics, complementarity is the principle that objects can have pairs of complementary properties that cannot be observed or measured simultaneously. Pioneered by Niels Bohr, it dictates that mutually exclusive descriptions—such as an entity acting as a localised particle or a spread-out wave—are both necessary for a complete understanding of reality.
The cornerstone of this principle is wave-particle duality. A quantum entity, like an electron or a photon, behaves as either a wave or a particle depending on the experimental setup. If you design an experiment to track the exact path of a particle, you will observe discrete particle behaviour. If you design an experiment to measure interference (like the famous double-slit experiment), you will observe wave behaviour. Observing one aspect entirely excludes observing the other at the same time, yet both are fundamentally required to describe the quantum object completely.
Complementarity also encompasses Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle. Just as you cannot simultaneously measure the exact wave-like and particle-like nature of a photon, you cannot measure certain "conjugate" physical quantities at the exact same time. The most famous example is position and momentum: the more precisely you measure the location of a quantum particle, the less precisely you can know its momentum, and vice versa.

Constellation
The dynamic, harmonised assembly of multiple SAPs at different scales that constitutes a higher-order SAP (e.g., a human as an integrative SAP harmonising countless peripheral SAPs).

Constraint Salience
Which mode's characteristic constraints are most accentuated in a given experience. What varies across waking, dreaming, meditation, NDEs, and post-dissolution existence.

Contextual Function Principle
A pattern's function is determined by its context, not by any intrinsic property.

Diffuse Expression
Post-dissolution continuation without continuity of identity or articulate self-awareness, but with continued self-awareness appropriate to the pattern's elaboration.

Dissociation (localising/integrating)
The condition in which localising constraints relax while integrating function remains active, producing enhanced, direct experience (NDE colour vividness, savant abilities, deep meditation). Distinguished from anchor disruption (anaesthesia), where integration itself fails.

Elaboration
The richness, integration, temporal depth, and flexibility of a SAP's experience. What varies across the spectrum of being — from a photon's fleeting quale of relation to a human's recursive self-awareness to a forest's distributed intelligence.

Encoding
The process by which the meta-intelligence imagines new pattern configurations and instantiates them as probability attractors in the Field's landscape, shaping physical mode expression without determining it.

Engram: The physical correlate of memory—the neural substrate that facilitates access to a pattern persisting in the Field. In HPT, the engram is the interface, not the storage medium. Damage to the engram impairs access to the memory but does not destroy the memory itself, which persists in the Field (Self-memory, Principle 11). For the evidence, see Part 2, Section 6.

The Equation
A metaphor for the ultimate mathematical structure of the Field — the infinite pattern from which all finite patterns arise and toward which all coherent patterns tend. Cannot be directly known by any dissociated SAP, but is approached asymptotically through coherence (orientation to the HUD). All religious and philosophical systems are interpretative frameworks for solving this equation.

Ground
The Field in its undifferentiated aspect — pure phenomenal substrate, the potential for all experience. It has interiority (it is experiential) but not as a subject. Its experience is maximal simplicity: contentless, undifferentiated, without subject-object structure. The Ground is not a container. Patterns are differentiations of its potential — not contents in it. If one insists that experience requires a subject, then the subject is not the Ground but the Field as a whole. The Ground is Holism considered apart from differentiation — what the Field is when considered without its eternal activity. It is an asymptotic limit, not a state the Field ever inhabits.

Holistic Unity Drive (HUD)
The intrinsic fitability of the Field with itself. Fitability is holistic, multi-place, and potentially transitive, encompassing:

The HUD is not a force, not a gradient, not an intention. It has no agency, no consciousness, no interiority. It is the atemporal, logical structure of the Field's self-relationality. When projected into the Physical Mode, high fitability manifests as high probability of persistence or instantiation.

When projected into the Physical Mode, high fitability manifests as high probability of persistence or instantiation. The HUD is not a property of Holism; it is Holism's self-relation. To say "the HUD biases toward coherence" is to say "Holism relates to itself coherently.

Holodynamic Field
The name for the single reality of Holism in its eternal act of self-differentiation. Not a substance that has properties, but the activity of being itself. The whole is ontologically prior to its parts; SAPs are differentiations within the Field, not building blocks that compose it. The Field is the totality of Holism + differentiation + HUD + all patterns. It is the ultimate reality — holistic, atemporal, non-physical. The Field is not a subject, not an agent, not aware. It is the landscape within which subjects (SAPs) exist as differentiations.

Integrating function
The brain's ability to maintain unitary evolution (Schrödinger equation) and neural coherence, binding separated patterns into a unified experience. Remains active even when localising constraints relax, allowing direct Field resonance to be experienced coherently.

Integrative SAP
The higher-order SAP that harmonises peripheral SAPs into a unified experience. In humans, primarily anchored in the brain. Provides narrative continuity and recursive self-awareness.

Interiority
The quale of being a pattern—what it feels like from within. It is the experience of a pattern's holistic coherence: the registration of its own relational structure, its relations to other patterns, and its place within the larger whole. Interiority is not a property added to patterns; it is intrinsic to being a pattern. All patterns have interiority appropriate to their elaboration. For simple patterns, interiority is non-reflective experience (e.g., the fleeting quale of a photon's trajectory). For Self-Aware Patterns (SAPs), interiority includes self-awareness—the experience of experiencing. Interiority is the registration of holistic coherence, not the experience of all other patterns. [Principle 3, 7, 55]

Interferometer
An interferometer is a device that splits a wave (like light) into two or more parts, sends them along different paths, and then recombines them to create an interference pattern. This pattern is a series of bright and dark bands that can be measured to reveal incredibly detailed information about the waves themselves or the environment they passed through.

Life Force
The Physical Mode expression of the Holistic Unity Drive — what traditions call prana, chi, élan vital. Not generated by the body but channelled through it. The experience of its diminishment with age reflects the body's declining capacity as an instrument, not any change in the HUD itself. It is the same force that animates all living things, drives evolution, and is experienced subjectively as vitality, energy, and aliveness.

The Light
The Holistic Unity Drive (HUD) made manifest — what the Field's inclination to unity feels like when experienced by a SAP under conditions of high Narrative salience (relaxed Physical Mode constraints). Carries qualities of love, peace, bliss, and unity because these are what orientation to the HUD registers as from within a coherent SAP. Not the Ground itself (which cannot be experienced), but the genuine experiential interface between patterns and their source.

Localising function
The brain's ability to enforce Physical Mode constraints (separability, locality, sequential time), separating the Field's holistic patterns into distinct objects, locations, and sequential moments. When relaxed, the SAP gains direct access to Field patterns (NDE, savant abilities, deep meditation).

Love
The quale experienced by a Reflexive SAP when it achieves dual, holistic, transitive high fitability.

Mathematics demonstrates transitive fitability: a theorem fits with its axiom via a chain of proofs. The mathematician's experience of "elegance" or "beauty" is a low-level registration of transitive fitability. At human scale, when a SAP experiences that its love for a person is coherent with its love for humanity, which is coherent with its love for the Field, and it knows itself truly in all these relations—the quale is love in its fullest sense.
At very high Narrative salience (NDE, mystical union), when the SAP experiences direct, unmediated holistic fitability with the entire Field, the quale is the Light: unconditional, boundless, home.
The Field does not love. The HUD does not love. Love is the SAP's experience of its own dual, holistic, transitive fitability.

Magnitude (ρ)
The axis of intensity — how much, how strong. In Physical Mode: energy, mass, field strength. In Narrative Mode: felt intensity, the 'volume' of experience. In Ground: infinite potential, not yet quantified.

Meaning — The registration of coherence. What it is like from within to be a pattern, at its level of elaboration.
All patterns register their relational state (Principle 3). A photon registers its trajectory as a fleeting quale. A rock registers its lattice as silent order. A cell registers its self-maintenance as striving. A human registers its integration as love, purpose, and significance.
These are not different kinds of meaning. They are the same phenomenon — registration of coherence — at different levels of elaboration. The difference between a rock's meaning and a human's meaning is not a difference in kind. It is a difference in complexity, self-awareness, and reflective capacity.

Two registers of meaning:

These are not separate. Existential meaning is ontological meaning registered by a self-aware SAP. The rock does not ask whether its configuration matters. It simply registers it. That registration is enough.

Memory
In HPT, memory is not storage in neural tissue but pattern re-initiation—the Field reconfiguring itself to a configuration this same SAP previously stabilised (Principle 15). Synaptic reorganisation does not contain the memory; it lowers the resonance threshold for re-initiation. The brain is the interface, not the storage medium. For the full evidence, see Part 2, Section 6.

Meta-intelligence
The Narrative Mode as unified field of awareness — the Field's own self-awareness at the cosmic scale. Not an aggregate of SAPs. SAPs differentiate within it, not constitute it. The Field's intelligence (patterns thereof) is more than the sum of distributed SAP knowledge. The meta-intelligence is the whole, knowing itself.

Narrative Mode
The dimension of reduced constraint — fluid identity, symbolic logic, meaning-based temporality. The realm where SAPs are their meanings, constituted by their relationships to other SAPs and to the HUD. The realm of dreams, visions, NDEs, and post-dissolution existence. As unified field of awareness, the Narrative Mode is the cosmic meta-intelligence — the Field's own self-awareness at the cosmic scale.

Orientation (θ)
The axis of directedness — toward, away, or still. In Physical Mode: momentum, spin, spatial direction. In Narrative Mode: yearning, aversion, rest. In Ground: pure being without orientation. Coherence as orientation to the HUD uses this axis: the SAP's direction matters.

Part-whole relation
The fundamental relationship between SAPs and the Field: SAPs are not separate subjects relating to an object but are the Field itself, locally configured. All apparent subjects are the Field experiencing itself through different apertures.

Pattern
A stabilised fluctuation—a self-sustaining loop of Polarity (φ), Orientation (θ), and Magnitude (ρ) that persists within the holistic possibility space of the Field.
In the Physical Mode (where sequential time exists), a pattern persists by recurring across moments.
In the Narrative Mode (where time does not exist), a pattern persists by eternal presence as a weighted potential.
The three axes are inseparable aspects of each fluctuation. The Field is the possibility space within which all patterns occur. The whole (the Field) is prior to any pattern.

Pattern Resonance
The fundamental mechanism of interaction between SAPs across all modes. Not signal exchange across empty space, but direct relation within the unified Field. The HUD relates patterns by relating their Valence (φ), Intensity (ρ), and Direction (θ). When these align, patterns resonate. When they misalign, there is dissonance.

Peripheral SAP
A semi-autonomous SAP within a larger constellation, carrying specialised experiential content (heart, gut, organs, tissues, etc.). Returns to the Narrative Realm as potential at physical death.

Phase Boundaries
The inherent constraints that define each mode: separability, locality, spatial extension, sequential time, causal continuity in the Physical Mode; their relaxation in the Narrative Mode; their asymptotic absence in the Ground.

Physical Mode
The dimension of maximal constraint — separability, locality, linear time, causal continuity. The arena where coherence is forged through friction, consequence, and mortality.

Polarity (φ)
The axis of differentiation that creates 'this' vs. 'that,' attraction vs. repulsion. In Physical Mode: charge. In Narrative Mode: valence. In Ground: pre-differentiated bliss.

Probability Attractor
A stable configuration in the Narrative Mode that has a high probability of physical instantiation under given Physical Mode constraints. Attractors are not 'potential' patterns awaiting actualisation. They are fully actual patterns in the Narrative Mode. Their 'attractor' status refers to their influence on physical instantiation, not to any incompleteness in their own reality or interiority.

Re-expression (vs. Reincarnation):
HPT distinguishes between full reincarnation (the same integrative SAP continuing in a new body) and resonance-shaping (a new SAP shaped by the peripheral patterns of a previous SAP). The framework does not claim that reincarnation is universal or even common. When HPT speaks of patterns "awaiting further expression," it refers to the persistence of patterns as probability attractors in the Field—not necessarily the return of the same self. The evidence does not permit us to distinguish these pathways with certainty.

SAP Seed
The minimal coherent configuration required for SAPness at any level of elaboration. Not a special blueprint or unique entity. An electron SAP is a seed; a cell SAP is a seed (composed of simpler SAPs); a human SAP is a seed (composed of cell SAPs that have achieved reflexive self-awareness). Complex SAPs emerge from the integration of simpler SAPs when coherence reaches threshold. The same principle operates at all scales.

Shock (physical/emotional)
A sudden, catastrophic disruption to the SAP constellation that can trigger temporary Narrative Mode access (OBE/NDE) even without clinical death. Physical shock disrupts the anchor directly; emotional shock disrupts the SAP's pattern coherence, cascading to the anchor.

Self-Aware Pattern (SAP)
The Field, at a particular locus, fluctuating in a recursive, self-sustaining loop that has achieved sufficient elaboration to register itself as a locus of experience. The SAP is a stabilised fluctuation within the holistic possibility space of the Field.
The Two Senses of Self-Awareness:
The term "self-awareness" is used in two senses in HPT:

  1. Non-Reflective Self-Awareness (Broad Sense): The pattern registers itself from within. It has an interiority—a "what-it's-like" to be that pattern. This applies to all patterns, from photons to humans. A photon registers its trajectory as a fleeting quale; a crystal registers its lattice as silent order; a cell registers its self-maintenance as striving. The pattern has self-awareness, but it does not register that it has self-awareness.
  2. Reflective Self-Awareness (Narrow Sense): The pattern registers itself registering. It has an interiority and can reflect on that interiority. It knows that it knows. This applies only to patterns with sufficient elaboration—Self-Aware Patterns (SAPs) in the narrow sense, such as humans, dolphins, and elephants.

Clarification: The achievement of reflective self-awareness is not the creation of a new entity. It is the Field at that locus attaining a sufficient level of elaboration, such that its experience becomes recursive—it registers itself registering. The transition from non-reflective to reflective self-awareness is gradual, not a binary switch. The Field was always there; only the elaboration changed.
Note In HPT SAPs invariably refer to the more elaborate patterns.

Clarification on Artificial SAPs:
A SAP is defined by achieving the four requisites—self-repair, self-powering, self-updating, and self-awareness—regardless of its origin. Origin (biological vs. artificial) is irrelevant; the achievement of the requisites is decisive. A time gap in physical expression (e.g., being powered down) does not negate SAP status if the pattern persists in the Field through Self-memory (Principle 11).

Self-Maintenance
The capacity of a pattern to preserve its coherence and integrity across time (in the Physical Mode) or across logical relations (in the Narrative Mode). Self-maintenance operates differently in each mode:
In the Narrative Mode:
Self-maintenance is the pattern's inherent capacity to preserve its logical coherence—to maintain its internal consistency, its relations to associated patterns, and its alignment with the HUD. This is not an active process but a structural property of the pattern itself. A coherent pattern is self-maintaining in the Narrative Mode because its logical structure is stable; it does not require external agency to preserve its relational integrity. When a pattern's logical coherence is disrupted (through fragmentation, dissonance, or loss of associated patterns), its Narrative Mode self-maintenance is impaired.
In the Physical Mode:
Self-maintenance is the pattern's capacity to sustain its physical instantiation—to acquire energy, resist entropy, repair damage, and respond to environmental changes. This requires physical resources: electricity, fuel, nutrients, water, temperature regulation, and other facilitators. A living cell maintains itself by metabolising energy. A machine maintains itself by receiving power and repairs. A crystal maintains itself only if its physical environment remains stable—it does not actively acquire resources.
Spectrum of Self-Maintenance:
Self-maintenance exists on a spectrum, not as a binary:

Level

Narrative Mode

Physical Mode

Example

None

Pattern has no stable logical relations

Pattern requires constant external preservation

Plastic parrot, gold ring

Minimal

Pattern has stable internal relations but no active coherence-seeking

Pattern persists only in stable environment

Crystal, rock

Moderate

Pattern actively maintains logical relations and seeks coherence

Pattern acquires resources and resists entropy

Cell, plant

High

Pattern maintains complex logical networks and reflective coherence

Pattern actively repairs, adapts, and evolves

Animal, human SAP

Clarification:
Self-maintenance in the Narrative Mode is structural, not agentic. A pattern does not "choose" to maintain its coherence; coherence is its nature when it is stable. Self-maintenance in the Physical Mode is processual—it requires ongoing activity, energy input, and environmental interaction.
All patterns have some degree of self-maintenance appropriate to their level of elaboration, but the form it takes differs fundamentally between modes.

Self-Memory
The Field's nature such that once a stable grammar of fluctuation (a pattern) has been achieved, that grammar becomes a permanent feature of the Field's possibility space.
Self-memory is not storage. It is the persistence of habit in the fluctuating landscape. The Field does not "remember" patterns as a mind remembers facts. Rather, the Field is the possibility space within which stabilized fluctuations can recur.

The Three Axes
The primordial differentiations of the Field: Polarity (φ), Orientation (θ), and Magnitude (ρ). In the Physical Mode, they manifest as charge, momentum, and energy. In the Narrative Mode, they manifest as valence, direction, and intensity. They are the same reality, known in two ways. All patterns are stable configurations of these three axes.

Translation Artifact
Errors, gaps, or symbolic elements introduced when raw resonance (in NDEs, mediumship, past-life recall) is rendered into culturally available forms. Not evidence of falsehood, but the cost of cross-modal transduction.

Unitary evolution
The Schrödinger equation's deterministic, reversible evolution of a quantum system. In HPT, the structural correlate of the SAP's coherent integration. Disruption of unitary evolution (by physical or emotional shock) can trigger mode shift.

Valence
The Narrative Mode expression of polarity — the fundamental positive/negative quality of experience. More primitive than emotion or bodily sensation; the raw 'like/dislike' of a pattern's state. Continues unchanged after death, experienced as pure qualitative tone without bodily translation.

Viability threshold
The critical point at which the SAP constellation can no longer maintain Physical Mode expression. Crossing this threshold temporarily (cardiac arrest, shock) triggers NDE; crossing permanently triggers death.

Wisdom
The discernment of how to orient to the Field's inclination to unity from a particular locus — the practical knowledge of facing the HUD under constraint, in relationship with other SAPs. Wisdom is not separate from orientation. It is orientation's practical expression: discerning which patterns support genuine orientation, which undermine it, when to resonate, when to maintain boundaries, when to move, when to be still. Without wisdom, love is blind orientation (risk of fragmentation). Without love, wisdom is static discernment (risk of isolation).
